Welding is essential to many industries in the Magic Valley, yet the demand for skilled welders is at an all-time high. This 30-hour introductory course provides hands-on training in Gas Tungsten Arc Welding (GTAW), equipping students with the foundational skills needed to succeed in the field.

Students will learn GTAW theory, proper equipment setup, and safe operating procedures. Through guided practice, participants will weld common joint configurations in various positions on carbon steel and aluminum, preparing them for real-world applications.

What Will I Learn?

  • Proper setup and safe operation of GTAW equipment.
  • How to weld fillet and lap joints in 2F and 3F positions on various thicknesses of carbon steel and aluminum.
  • Welding theory, including electrical characteristics and troubleshooting of the GTAW process.

Course Requirements and Materials

  • Open to individuals aged 16 and older.
  • We provide all curriculum materials and training supplies required for the course.
  • Participants must wear closed-toe shoes and safe clothing free of loose or hanging items, such as belts, chains, or other accessories, to ensure safety around equipment.
  • If available, please bring a welding helmet, welding gloves, and a flame-resistant long-sleeve shirt. These items can also be provided for use during the course if needed.

Instructor Bio

Sam Thompson

Sam’s passion for welding began at age 11 and has continued throughout his career. As a welding instructor, Sam brings real-world experience into the classroom, with a focus on practical, hands-on training and helping students build confidence in their skills.

He specializes in clean MIG welding and complex Aluminum TIG work and enjoys helping students work through challenging concepts. For Sam, one of the most rewarding parts of teaching is seeing the moment a new skill finally clicks for a student.

Outside the classroom and welding shop, Sam enjoys spending his time outdoors, especially fishing and hunting.
