This course offers a comprehensive introduction to the SMAW welding process. You’ll learn both the theory and hands-on techniques for safely setting up and using SMAW equipment. Throughout the course, you'll practice welding common industry joints in various positions on carbon steel, building a solid foundation in SMAW welding and preparing you for real-world applications.

Who Should Attend?

This class requires verification that you are a U.S. citizen or eligible non-citizen. Eligibility must be verified before class starts. Please contact us for a list of acceptable documentation or for any questions.

Course Requirements and Materials

  • Open to individuals aged 16 and older.
  • We provide all curriculum materials and training supplies required for the course.
  • Participants must wear closed-toe shoes and safe clothing free of loose or hanging items, such as belts, chains, or other accessories, to ensure safety around equipment.
  • If available, please bring a welding helmet, welding gloves, and a flame-resistant long-sleeve shirt. These items can also be provided for use during the course if needed.

Instructor Bio

Sam Thompson

Sam’s passion for welding began at age 11 and has continued throughout his career. As a welding instructor, Sam brings real-world experience into the classroom, with a focus on practical, hands-on training and helping students build confidence in their skills.

He specializes in clean MIG welding and complex Aluminum TIG work and enjoys helping students work through challenging concepts. For Sam, one of the most rewarding parts of teaching is seeing the moment a new skill finally clicks for a student.

Outside the classroom and welding shop, Sam enjoys spending his time outdoors, especially fishing and hunting.
