This 30-hour intermediate course builds on the foundational skills learned in SMAW Level 1, providing students with a deeper understanding of Shielded Metal Arc Welding (SMAW) theory and techniques. Participants will refine their welding skills by working with complex joint configurations commonly found in the industry. Training will focus on welding carbon steel plates and pipes in various positions, preparing students for real-world applications and advanced certifications.

This class requires verification that you are a U.S. citizen or eligible non-citizen. Eligibility must be verified before class starts. Please contact us for a list of acceptable documentation or for any questions.

What Will I Learn?

  • Weld plates in 3F, 1G, and 2G positions using an E7018 electrode.
  • Gain a deeper understanding of welding theory and troubleshooting techniques.

Course Requirements and Materials

  • Open to individuals aged 16 and older.
  • We provide all curriculum materials and training supplies required for the course.
  • Participants must wear closed-toe shoes and safe clothing free of loose or hanging items, such as belts, chains, or other accessories, to ensure safety around equipment.
  • If available, please bring a welding helmet, welding gloves, and a flame-resistant long-sleeve shirt. These items can also be provided for use during the course if needed.

Instructor Bio

Sam Thompson

Sam’s passion for welding began at age 11 and has continued throughout his career. As a welding instructor, Sam brings real-world experience into the classroom, with a focus on practical, hands-on training and helping students build confidence in their skills.

He specializes in clean MIG welding and complex Aluminum TIG work and enjoys helping students work through challenging concepts. For Sam, one of the most rewarding parts of teaching is seeing the moment a new skill finally clicks for a student.

Outside the classroom and welding shop, Sam enjoys spending his time outdoors, especially fishing and hunting.
