Description

Organizations struggle to create a culture and routine of continuous improvement. Kata is a simple, structured and focused approach to developing the habits to achieve even the most difficult challenges in an organization.

In this 2-hour course, participants will learn improvement kata, a scientific method of problem-solving, in a fun, team-oriented exercise. They will also learn coaching kata, helping others make improvements, by asking 5 questions following each round of the team exercise. In addition to learning and practicing improvement and coaching kata in class, everyone will leave with a job aid that will help them implement kata in their organization.

Instructor Bio

David O'Connell

This course will be taught by Manufacturing Specialist, Dave O'Connell of TechHelp, and Idaho State University. Dave O’Connell is a Manufacturing Specialist with over 30 years of manufacturing and food processing experience. Dave and his wife, Staci, live in Pocatello, Idaho. Dave was introduced to advanced manufacturing practices early in his career at General Electric (GE) where he attended a Deming Four Day Seminar and learned Statistical Process Control and Continuous Improvement. He continued to increase his skills and knowledge in these areas by getting his Lean Six Sigma Green Belt Certification (2004) and Lean Six Sigma Black Belt Certification (2017). Dave received advanced training in Training Within Industry (TWI); a simple, yet effective, method for training employees, dealing with people problems, and effectively using resources in the workplace.  

Dave received a Bachelor of Science degree in Business from Mesa State College in Grand Junction, Colorado. While at General Electric he completed the Financial Management and Advanced Financial Management Programs.
