Medical Assistant Application Process

Eligibility Requirements
  • This class requires verification that you are a U.S. citizen or eligible non-citizen. Eligibility must be verified before registration.
  • Students must be at least 18 years old to participate in clinicals (per clinical site guidelines).

  • Students must have a high school diploma or GED (or be within 12 months of completing one). Please note: the national certification exam cannot be taken without proof of completion.

Application to program
In order to apply to the Medical Assisting program, the following items are required: 
  1. (Optional) Provide a Professional Profile Image/Headshot with appropriate background and attire. No avatars, bitmojis, filters or emojis.
  2. Cover letter indicating why the applicant wants to be in the Medical Assisting Program and what makes them a strong candidate. The letter should be grammatically correct and signed by the applicant.
  3. Resume.
  4. Proof of high school completion: an unofficial copy of diploma, transcript, GED, or HSE certificate
  5. Keyboarding test: applicants should key at approximately 35 wpm. Assessment can be performed online at typingtest.com (include best 1-minute assessment in portfolio).
  6. Save and attach results from the following Northstar Digital Literacy assessments to the portfolio. Assessments do not need to be taken all at one time, but will take at least an hour to complete:
    1. Basic Computer Skills
    2. Internet Basics
    3. Using Email
    4. Windows 10
    5. Microsoft Word
    6. Microsoft Excel
    7. Microsoft PowerPoint

Medical Assisting Level 1: Foundations

Build a solid foundation in medicial assistant knowledge and hands-on skills including, medical office procedures, human diseases, and clinical procedures.

Demonstrate critical thinking, effective and empathetic communication, ethical and legal awareness, and safety practices while providing patient care and interacting professionally with patients, staff, providers, and third-party payers in a medical office setting.

Medical Assisting 3: Practicum

Students complete a 180-hour unpaid practicum in an ambulatory healthcare setting, where they are supervised and evaluated on clinical and administrative competencies, maintain daily communication and records, keep a practicum journal, and complete an exit interview upon completion.
