Emergency Medical Technician

Description

This course is a lecture study of the National EMS Education Standards for the Emergency Medical Technician including preparatory, pharmacology, assessment, airway, shock and resuscitation, medical emergencies, trauma, special patient population, and EMS operations.

Note: There is a lab required for this class that must be taken simultaneously. Practical labs may be on the CSI Twin Falls campus or at an arranged off-campus site.

 

What Will I Learn?

  • Recognize and perform in the role, function, and responsibilities of an Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) in both the emergency care and operational aspects of EMT’s in the health care delivery system as defined by the Idaho Bureau of EMS, and the National Registry of EMT’s.
  • Safely demonstrate competency in patient assessment and in skills as referenced to the current National EMS Education Standards for Emergency Medical Technicians and the State of Idaho Training Standards.
  • Use effective communication skills in written and verbal situations.
  • Apply legal and ethical principles in a variety of situations.
  • Recognize and properly respond to the affected needs of the patient.
  • Demonstrate competence in the use and care of the equipment required for optimum patient care and safety.

Walk Away With

All courses are approved by the State of Idaho EMS Bureau. Successful graduates who received a grade of 75% or higher in all HWFE 105 courses, qualify to take the National Registry of EMTs Certification exam.

Who Should Attend?

Whether you are new to the workforce or have been in the workforce for years, this course is recommended for anyone who is interested in beginning a new career in Emergency Medical Services, Fire, or Public Services.

Note: Students must be 17 years old by the time of the EMT certification exam

Clinical Requirements

After placement into the program, students must obtain the following:

  • Current AHA Healthcare Provider Certification (Completed during the EMT course)
  • Show proof of current immunizations for the following:
    • Chicken Pox
    • Hepatitis B
    • MMR x 2
    • Polio
    • Seasonal flu vaccine
    • TB
    • Tdap
  • Pass a criminal background check (Instructions given in course)
  • Proof of medical insurance

Instructor Bio

Devin Anderson is the EMS Lead Instructor with the College of Southern Idaho. He has over 10 years of teaching experience and has spent the last 4 years teaching and testing EMS students for various programs and colleges. Over the course of his career, he has spent time working in various roles for police, fire, and EMS agencies which have given him a holistic view of how emergency services agencies work together.
