Next Steps: Getting Licensed After Your Apprenticeship
Congratulations - you did it! Completing your 4-year plumbing apprenticeship is a major achievement, and you should be proud of all the hard work, long hours, and dedication it took to get here. Now, you're just one step away from becoming a licensed journeyman plumber in Idaho. Here's what to do next:
- Meet the work & schooling requirements- Make sure you have documented 8,000 hours of on‑the‑job plumbing work under the supervision of a licensed journeyman or master plumber, and complete 576 classroom hours (144 hours annually for 4 years) of approved instruction.
- Apply to take the Journeyman Exam- (IAPMO) Submit your exam application through Idaho's DOPL / State Plumbing Board. After approval, schedule the IAPMO journey plumbing exam via PSI. You typically have one year from approval to take the exam. Here is the direct link on how to create an account and schedule your exam Program Information and Exams | Division of Occupational and Professional Licenses
- Pass the exam- Upon passing, you may be eligible for your Journeyman plumbing license.
- Apply for license through DOPL- Submit your license application with all required documentation (proof of work hours, schooling, exam passing, etc.).
- Ensure ongoing compliance - Always verify with the plumbing board or DOPL that your credentials and requirements are up to date.
Some states have reciprocity agreements - In Idaho we have reciprocal Agreements with Montana, Oregon and Washington. Check if your out‑of‑state license or experience can help by reaching out to DOPL Program Information and Exams | Division of Occupational and Professional Licenses
